Gallery III will showcase artwork by Alex Hazel through the month of February in an exhibit titled We Have Always Been Here.
“In the chiaroscuro of history, where the shadows of forgotten narratives lurk, I embark on a visual journey that seeks to illuminate the suppressed voices of LGBT individuals within the tapestry of ancient religions. Drawing inspiration from myths and religious texts, my artwork serves as a bridge between antiquity and the present, challenging preconceived notions and unearthing obscured truths. The project delves into the often-overlooked stories of queer individuals who existed within the folds of ancient civilizations, their narratives buried beneath layers of societal prejudice and religious dogma. As I immerse myself in the rich iconography of various ancient cultures, I peel away the veils of time to reveal hidden stories that resonate with the experiences of contemporary queer individuals. The artwork serves as a visual dialogue between the past and the present, inviting viewers to question the impact of historical oppression on the collective consciousness of the LGBTQ+ community.”
