“Sam began his study of painting and drawing with Dick and Edith Goetz in Oklahoma City and was encouraged by them to study during three summers with their mentor Henry Hensche, at the Cape School in Provincetown, Massachusetts. He then spent twelve years in New York City, studying at the Art Students League and the New York Academy of Art.
His major interest in painting and drawing has been portraiture, attempting to capture the essence of the model through the relationships of color, value and shape. The same challenge of relationships exists in still life and landscape. Sam Echols has specialized in portraiture oil painting for over 30 years and has worked to capture the likeness, personality, and mood of his models. Sam is passionate about representing the vibrancy of his subjects by painting from life.”
